Zubaira Tukhugov sheds light on a pivotal moment involving Khabib Nurmagomedov’s determination surrounding UFC 242. Following the infamous UFC 229 brawl, which saw Tukhugov’s involvement, the fighter faced suspension and contract termination. However, Nurmagomedov insisted on Tukhugov’s return to the octagon before agreeing to his own fight.
Amidst the chaos, Tukhugov reveals, “Khabib said, ‘Zubaira will fight first then I will fight, too.'” This stance prompted the UFC to reevaluate and ultimately reinstate Tukhugov, promising him a spot on the Abu Dhabi card alongside Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev.
Initially sidelined since his last fight in May 2016, Tukhugov anticipated his comeback for UFC 242, marking the promotion’s return to Abu Dhabi. While Nurmagomedov and Makhachev were pivotal for the event, Tukhugov’s inclusion wasn’t initially part of the plan. However, when it seemed Tukhugov wouldn’t be accommodated on the card. Nurmagomedov threatened to withdraw from his title defense against Dustin Poirier.
“Dana White said that they had no room for me on that card,” Tukhugov recalls. “So, they were going to let me fight in Moscow. He tried to make Khabib change his mind, but Khabib was like, ‘Okay, I am going to rip this contract up now.'”
Tukhugov’s plea led to a resolution, with the UFC accommodating him on the card, respecting Nurmagomedov’s stance. Despite facing a split draw against Lerone Murphy, Tukhugov’s participation marked a significant moment in his career trajectory.
Following his UFC 242 appearance, Tukhugov remained with the promotion for four more fights, concluding with a split decision loss in February 2023. Meanwhile, Nurmagomedov fought once more, retiring undefeated at UFC 254 in October 2020.
This revelation underscores Nurmagomedov’s loyalty to his team and their shared journey within the UFC, showcasing the bond and determination that transcends beyond the octagon.
