Renowned commentator Martin Tyler has shared the incredible story of how surgery rescued his iconic voice from potential permanent damage, allowing him to continue his illustrious career behind the mic.
With a remarkable 50-year journey in sports commentary, Tyler has established himself as one of the most familiar voices in the industry. Last summer, he stepped back from his role at Sky Sports, making way for Peter Drury.
However, Tyler faced a dire situation following health complications during the 2022 Qatar World Cup, risking the loss of his voice. Swift action was necessary, leading to surgery to avert permanent damage.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Tyler disclosed to The Daily Star, “I overused my voice, and the climate in Qatar affected my cords, so I realized I needed help.” He recounted the fear of losing not just his livelihood but also the ability to socialize, which deeply affected him.

Following examinations at St George’s Hospital, Tyler underwent a successful operation to address keratosis growth on his larynx. With the assistance of the hospital’s speech and language voice therapy team, he embarked on the journey to recover his distinctive voice.
Expressing gratitude for the exceptional care he received, Tyler emphasized the importance of humor in maintaining spirits during treatment. Since his recovery, the 78-year-old has resumed commentary duties, completing 40 commentaries—a remarkable turnaround from the brink of losing his voice permanently.
Tyler’s experience serves as a poignant reminder to appreciate the value of his voice, which he once took for granted. Despite stepping back from Premier League commitments, he continues to grace the screens, contributing to TNT Sports’ coverage of the Champions League.
