Hardik Pandya’s performance under the lights of the Wankhede Stadium has sparked criticism following Mumbai Indians’ (MI) loss to arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Despite picking up two wickets, concerns were raised about his bowling economy and overall fitness.
Concerns Over Fitness and Economy Rate

Former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist questioned Pandya’s bowling effectiveness, highlighting his expensive spell. Pandya conceded a hefty 43 runs in just 3 overs, with a staggering economy rate of 14.33. 26 runs came off his bowling in the final over, proving crucial in allowing CSK to reach a formidable 206/4. Gilchrist’s observations focused on Pandya’s apparent physical struggles and lack of bowling rhythm.
Pandya’s Captaincy and Rohit Sharma’s Heroics
While acknowledging Pandya’s leadership qualities, Gilchrist emphasized concerns about his fitness potentially hindering his bowling performance. In contrast, Rohit Sharma, the former MI skipper, showcased his batting prowess with a valiant century (105* off 63 balls). Despite Sharma’s heroics, MI were unable to chase down the target.
Pandya Acknowledges CSK’s Strength
Following the match, Pandya was gracious in his praise, commending Matheesha Pathirana’s exceptional bowling for CSK. He also acknowledged the advantage CSK holds with the experience of MS Dhoni behind the stumps.
MI’s Next Challenge
Currently languishing at the eighth position in the IPL points table, MI will be looking to bounce back in their upcoming clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Thursday, April 18th. The match will be held at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.
