Matheesha Pathirana has established a pattern of making immediate impacts whenever he steps onto the field for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and this trend persisted during their clash against Mumbai Indians in Match 29 of IPL 2024 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

In pursuit of 207 runs, Mumbai Indians got off to a rapid start, courtesy of explosive batting performances from Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma. Recognizing the need for a breakthrough, Ruturaj Gaikwad introduced Matheesha Pathirana into the attack for the first time in the eighth over of MI’s innings.
Pathirana, who had missed a couple of matches due to injury concerns, wasted no time in making his presence felt. He struck early by dismissing the dangerous Ishan Kishan. Delivering a full ball towards Ishan’s pads, the left-hander could only manage to hit straight to Shardul Thakur at short mid-wicket, ending his innings disappointingly. Pathirana’s immediate impact upon his return to the side, serving as an impact substitute for Ajinkya Rahane, garnered significant attention.
Furthermore, Pathirana continued to exert his influence by claiming the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav just a ball later, effectively revitalizing CSK’s chances in the game.
