Moeen Ali found himself on the sidelines for Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) initial three matches in IPL 2024, with the team opting for the Kiwi duo of Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell in their playing XI. However, a twist of fate occurred with an unexpected injury to Matheesha Pathirana and the absence of Mustafizur Rahman, which paved the way for Moeen Ali’s inclusion in the side. Making the most of this opportunity, Ali showcased his value with his proficient off-break bowling.

Ali’s significant contribution came in the form of dismissing Aiden Markram, who had been anchoring Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) innings with a well-crafted 50. CSK was in dire need of breaking Markram’s rhythm to hinder SRH’s momentum.
The pivotal wicket came on the final delivery of the 14th over, with Ali delivering a fuller ball on the off-stump line. Markram attempted a reverse sweep but missed, resulting in the ball striking him on the pads. CSK players erupted in a unified appeal, and the umpire promptly raised his finger, providing a sigh of relief for the CSK camp. Markram opted for a review, yet the Ball Tracking affirmed the umpire’s decision, displaying three reds. Despite Ali’s breakthrough, CSK’s efforts were in vain, as SRH ultimately sealed the victory in the 19th over.
In the initial innings, CSK posted a total of 165 runs, with Shivam Dube leading the charge with an impressive 45 off 24 balls. However, SRH’s top order dominated from the onset, amassing 78 runs in the Powerplay and establishing a strong foundation for their chase. Markram’s fluent knock of 50 off just 36 deliveries was instrumental, although he fell short of finishing the game, a goal he aims to achieve in future matches this season.
