Former Racing Star Heikki Kovalainen to Undergo Open-Heart Surgery

Kovalainen, who had plans to return to the Japanese Rally Championship in 2024 with Rally Team AICELLO, has chosen not to compete due to the increased risk associated with his condition. He was due to partner with Sae Kitagawa, with whom he won consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023.

The decision came after a routine medical examination ahead of the season opener revealed the need for further investigation. Subsequent tests confirmed the diagnosis of ascending aortic aneurysm, prompting Kovalainen to prioritize his health and undergo surgery.

In a statement, Heikki Kovalainen expressed his intention to undergo the surgery and begin the recovery process with the goal of returning to rallying in the future. He expressed gratitude for the support of his team partners and fans during this challenging time.

Rally Team AICELLO, while disappointed by the news, has pledged its full support to Kovalainen during his recovery process. The team will continue to participate in the championship with Katsuhiko Taguchi as a replacement driver, aiming to support Kovalainen’s eventual return.

Kovalainen has been actively involved in motorsport in Japan since 2015, achieving success in SUPER GT and the Japanese Rally Championship. Despite this setback, he remains determined to overcome his health challenge and resume his racing career in the future.
