Mark Clattenburg, Nottingham Forest’s new referee observer, has criticized the match official’s decision during Forest’s recent defeat against Liverpool, highlighting a crucial error that affected the outcome of the game.

The controversy arose when Liverpool awarded possession following a stop page due to an injury to Forest player Ibrahima Konate, despite Forest being in possession before the stop page
According to Mark Clattenburg, the rules stipulate that if the referee halts play, possession should be returned to the team in control of the ball prior to the stop page – in this case, Forest. However, Tierney restarted the game with Liverpool in possession, ultimately leading to Darwin Nunez’s winning goal.
While Clattenburg acknowledged that the referee’s decision did not directly result in the goal, he emphasized Forest’s rightful claim to possession and their subsequent frustration at the turn of events.
