In a thrilling conclusion to the fourth Test between India and England, Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel showcased nerves of steel to guide India to a series-clinching five-wicket victory on the fourth day of the match in Ranchi.
Facing a target of 192 runs for victory, India found themselves in a spot of bother at 120-5. However, Gill, who contributed a vital 52 runs, and Jurel, who added 39 unbeaten runs to his name, combined forces to form an unbroken partnership of 72 runs, steering India to victory in the second session of play.
With this win, India secured an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series, bouncing back strongly after a setback in the opening Test match.
The defeat marked the first series loss for captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum since assuming their roles in 2022 and implementing their aggressive brand of cricket, known as “Bazball”.
Gill played a composed innings, anchoring the chase with his patient knock of 52 runs, while Jurel, who had earlier impressed with a resilient 90 in India’s first innings, provided crucial support, particularly when England’s Shoaib Bashir threatened with two quick wickets after lunch.
Despite the pressure, Gill and Jurel remained calm, rotating the strike efficiently to keep the scoreboard ticking. Gill reached his fifty in style with consecutive sixes off Bashir.
Jurel sealed the victory with a decisive blow, prompting jubilant celebrations from the Indian team and fans alike.
India’s Solid Opening Stand:
Earlier in the day, India made a strong start with openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal extending their partnership before England’s Joe Root broke through by dismissing Jaiswal for 37 runs. Rohit, who had reached his half-century, fell for 57 after being stumped by Ben Foakes off Tom Hartley’s bowling.
Despite some resistance from the Indian middle order, Bashir’s impressive bowling performance kept England in contention, but ultimately, it was India’s day.
India’s spin duo, Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, orchestrated the victory by sharing nine wickets in England’s second innings, limiting them to a mere 145 runs on day three.
As the series concluded, attention turned to the final Test scheduled to begin on March 7 in Dharamsala, promising another exciting showdown between the two teams.
