During his illustrious career, Lionel Messi was a constant thorn in the side of Real Madrid while playing for Barcelona. With numerous goals and assists against their arch-rivals, Messi’s departure from the Camp Nou in 2021 might have been seen as a relief for some associated with Real Madrid. However, Zinedine Zidane, then the manager of Real Madrid, revealed a surprising sentiment regarding Messi’s potential exit from La Liga a year before it happened.
Contrary to expectations, Zidane expressed his desire for Lionel Messi to remain in the league, stating, “I don’t know what will happen but we hope not because he is in this league and we want the best in this league.” This statement provided insight into Zidane’s competitive spirit, demonstrating his eagerness to compete against the finest talents in football.

Despite Zidane’s wish, Messi stayed for another season at Barcelona before joining Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for a new chapter in his career. While expectations were high for Messi’s stint at PSG, his performance arguably fell short of some fans’ hopes. Despite scoring goals for the French club, including in the Champions League, PSG experienced disappointing eliminations from the tournament during Messi’s tenure.
In contrast to Messi’s departure from PSG, Zidane’s tenure at Real Madrid also came to an end, as he parted ways with the club citing a loss of faith from the hierarchy. Carlo Ancelotti succeeded him as manager, leaving Zidane currently without a managerial position.
As both Zidane and Messi continue their respective journeys, they remain revered figures in the world of football, celebrated for their immense contributions to the sport.
