Honda has secured the services of Alex Baumgartel, co-founder of Kalex, to enhance the development of its MotoGP chassis, according to sources at Autosport.
The collaboration between Honda and Kalex marks a significant move, given Kalex’s prominence in Moto2 engineering. Where its chassis are widely utilized across the grid.
In the previous season, Honda engaged Kalex to supply a chassis for the RC213V, ridden at the time by Marc Marquez and Joan Mir. Despite some reservations from riders regarding comfort, the collaboration provided valuable insights and data for Honda’s development endeavors.
Baumgartel’s signing is seen as pivotal by Honda to sustain the progress initiated during testing at Valencia in November. Shortly after the conclusion of the 2023 season, riders Mir, Taakaki Nakagami, along with new additions Luca Marini and Johann Zarco, had the opportunity to test a revamped version of the bike planned for 2024.
One notable enhancement in the 2024-spec bike, tested post the San Marino Grand Prix last year. Is an approximate weight reduction of eight kilograms compared to its predecessor.
At the onset of the first official pre-season test, Baumgartel was spotted donning HRC attire, signifying his active involvement in the project.
Honda’s decision to enlist Baumgartel aligns with a broader strategic shift observed in Japanese marques like Honda and Yamaha. Historically cautious about integrating external expertise for crucial technical roles. Yamaha appointed Massimo from Ducati as its new technical director for 2024. Yamaha had also recruited Marco Nicotra from Ducati to bolster its aerodynamics division previously.
Baumgartel’s addition to Honda, while he continues his association with Kalex in parallel. Underscores Honda’s determination to adopt a more dynamic approach. With this move, Honda aims to expedite chassis production and minimize the lead time between production and testing.
Baumgartel’s role will officially be as a Technical Advisor, contracted directly by HRC.
