The Unique Agreement Allowing Andre Onana to Continue Goalkeeping Duties for United Before AFCON Commitment
A successful agreement between the club and the Cameroonian FA allows Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, to feature in the Premier League game against Tottenham before joining Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.
Onana, who has been a key figure for United, starting in all 29 matches this season, will be available for the Tottenham clash on Sunday. The club reached an agreement with the Cameroonian FA to delay Onana’s call-up until January 14, allowing him to participate in the game against Wigan in the FA Cup and the crucial Premier League match against Spurs.
Following the match against Tottenham, Onana will embark on a seven-hour flight to Ivory Coast to join the Cameroon squad for their AFCON opener against Guinea on January 15. The possibility exists that Onana may not miss any additional United matches during AFCON if Cameroon fails to progress beyond the group stage.
United has a two-week winter break after the Tottenham game, and their next scheduled fixture is the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Eastleigh or Newport on the weekend of January 27. In case Cameroon advances to the AFCON final on February 13, Onana could potentially miss up to four United matches, including a crucial encounter against Aston Villa.
While other Premier League clubs faced a January 1 deadline to release their players ahead of AFCON, United’s successful negotiation allows them to retain Onana’s services for the Tottenham clash, providing a boost to their goalkeeping strength during this crucial period.
